Plaka, Athens

The Basics

This charming old neighborhood is full of cafés and restaurants as well as shops aimed at tourists (with prices to match). That said, it's definitely one of the nicest parts of Athens to wander around and is centrally located near archaeological sites and museums. Whether you explore Athens independently or as part of a city tour, you're likely to end up here at some point. Dozens of guided tours pass through the neighborhood, from small-group walking tours and shore excursions to night tours and tours that include dinner or a Greek dance performance.

Acropolis & Plaka Neighbourhood Private Tour with Admission
Our guide was excellent. She asked us first thing what kind of tour experience we would like to have, do we like to walk fast, do we like to stop often etc... She brought the history to Athens to life. We enjoyed her company and the tour ended with her ordering authentic Greek food at a lovely restaurant in Plaka :)

Acropolis & Plaka Neighbourhood Private Tour with Admission
This was an exceptional experience. Our tour guide, Betty, was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The whole site is overwhelming but Betty really breaks it down and explains so much. It was a pleasure to learn from her and spend the time with her. If we were going to do another tour we would have definitely booked Betty!!

Acropolis monuments, Parthenon and Athens Hidden gems walking tour in Plaka
It was a beautiful day out in Athens. The pictures were beautiful and the perspective it gave us on Athens by ending the tour at the hilltop near the Prison of Socrates was the cherry on the sundae.

Acropolis monuments, Parthenon and Athens Hidden gems walking tour in Plaka
Our guide Daphne was there early and from the first introductions, we had a very interesting tour starting with the changing of the Guard at the President's Palace to a picnic of Greek snacks and wine on Filopappos Hill overlooking the Acropolis almost five hours later. Excellent day!!

Athens Day Tour-Skip the line: Acropolis, Acropolis museum, Plaka and Local Food
Our tour guide, Maritza, (I can’t recall exactly spelling) was amazing! She took us up to the Acropolis, gave us amazing history and details and never missed a beat to take pics, answer questions and always with a smile! The Acropolis museum was also a huge treat, again, full of detailed information we would have never known. The food portion was also great! We went to a couple amazing places that we would not have known about otherwise and had the BEST gyros. She was smart and funny and really made our very first tour in Greece the best possible. Thank you!!! Jerry & Kim, TX, USA

Athens Day Tour-Skip the line: Acropolis, Acropolis museum, Plaka and Local Food
An enriching experience Our tour guide, Maria, was very considerate of our comfort, taking us slowly through the acropolis on a very hot day, finding places for shade and rest. She shared information about the acropolis and Parthenon which conveyed the importance of this spot in Western culture. She also shared the mythology and drama, which made the tour fun. She also guided us through the museum, which gave us an even deeper appreciation of the site. The refreshments, which were local treats, were very welcome and delicious as well.

Acropolis monuments, Parthenon and Athens Hidden gems walking tour in Plaka
What a highlight of our trip to Greece! Marissa was very knowledgeable and personable. We watched the Changing of the Guard with no one around, visited Hadrian's Arch, strolled through the three tiers of Plaka, and enjoyed a yummy lunch with views of the Acropolis among other sites. A great way to get acquainted with Athens!

When to Get There

Plaka is a 24-hour destination, so it's best to plan your visit around what you want to see in the area; for example, while the sprawling Acropolis Museum is open daily, the Bath House of the Winds is closed on Tuesdays. Hang around when night falls for a meal in a local taverna or, at the very least, a drink in a pub.

Anafiotika

Arguably the prettiest part of Plaka, Anafiotika is a charming little area that was originally constructed by migrant workers from the Cyclades, who came to work on King Otto's palace. Much of its architecture was influenced by the hometowns of the original inhabitants, with whitewashed walls and lots of angular structures typical to the islands. It’s a fun place to wander and worth visiting for great city views.
