The Basics

Whether taking a sunset cruise around Cape Sounion, driving the scenic coastal road along the Attica peninsula, or enjoying the panoramic views from the cliff tops, there are numerous options for visiting the ancient temple. One of the most popular ways to visit is on a half-day tour from Athens, and many tours also stop at the idyllic beaches along the Attica Riviera, or include a romantic dinner in Vouliagmeni Bay. For the best value, combine a Cape Sounion tour with an Athens city tour, a walking tour of the Athens Acropolis, or a day trip to Mycenae and Epidaurus.

Full Day Private Tour: Essential Athens Highlights plus Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon
This was such a great way to see Athens when you only have a day or so in the city. We got to see so many historical places and learned a great deal in the process. Lunch was delicious as well. All in all, it was a really fun day!

Full Day Private Tour: Essential Athens Highlights plus Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon
The visit to the Acropolis of Athens was certainly the highlight of the day...an incredible place. Sounion was also great, and a place I had never heard of prior to the trip. The drive there was beautiful. Guide/driver was informative and full of interesting stories. Definitely a tour worth taking.

Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Small-Group Tour from Athens
Our guide was great! You do not get enough time to swim in the cape and eat though. Really poor time wise for that. You spend waaay too much time waiting for the sunset, we wish we had more time to swim instead of spending all the time at the top waiting.

Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Small-Group Tour from Athens
Everything went off as scheduled. Our driver was a few minutes early to pick us up. We were not expecting, but enjoyed, the brief stop at Lake Vougliameni. After visiting the Temple of Poseidon, we enjoyed a light refreshment at the cafe there. Then, we had a wonderful lunch at a local taverna down on the beach in Sounion.

Private Day Trip to Cape Sounio & Temple of Poseidon
Fastos was a great tour guide that gave us unique insight into the average life of Greek people and society. The actual sight was pretty cool, but the drive was definitely the highlight.

Cape Sounio, Temple of Poseidon and Athenian riviera private tour from Athens
Panos was our driver last night on our trip to Sounion. My wife loved that he was very safe and she was at ease despite the sometimes windy roads. We had wonderful views and wonderful pictures. Panos stopped for us to get a quick bite at a place he recommended on way back to hotel. We had a great time. I would recommend.

Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Small-Group Tour from Athens
The most memorable part of the trip is the beautiful scenic drive up to the The Temple of Poseidon . Christian our Guide has so much knowledge of Ancient Greece it's well worth the trip. Unfortunately we were unable to see the Temple up close due to an unscheduled photo shoot for Dior models. All in all it was wonderful trip..

Athens Highlights & Sounio Temple of Poseidon Full Day Private Tour
This was a wonderful tour. I have seen much of what was on the tour before about 10 years ago, but I missed out on so much the first time. This time I did the private tour and was just four of us and also hired a licensed tour guide to join us for the tour. Panos was the tour leader and picked us up at our hotel at the exact time he said he would be there. Then he spent the day taking us all over Athens and Sounio. We started at the acropolis thanks to our licensed guide Giannis who accompanied us into the acropolis we learned so much about the history, geography, myths and legends of Greece. Giannis you could tell was passionate about all things Greek and it showed. He could explain in detail so much about the history behind what we were seeing. Every question we had was answered in detail almost before we could finish asking. After the acropolis we went to Sounio to see the temple of Poseidon which is a bit of a drive but it’s along the coast with beautiful scenery. Pianos stopped at a couple of great places along the way to take a few snapshots of the magnificent views. The temple of Poseidon was a great site to see on top of a mountain surrounded by beautiful sea views in every direction. Panos then brought us to a great restaurant for a wonderful Greek lunch. Then it was back to Athens for the remainder of the tour including Parliament building where we watched the changing of the guards and the original modern olympic stadium. We all agreed was a great tour that taught us a lot and we saw some amazing things. Even though we did hire a licensed guide which I believe brings a lot more to the tour I also have no doubt that even without them the tour would be amazing and very informative. Panos seemed to know a lot about all the things that we saw and brought a lot to the tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Wear comfortable shoes as the ruins are situated on uneven ground and require some walking.

  • Bring your swimsuit. There is a swimming beach at the foot of the cape.

  • Parts of the temple are accessible to those with limited mobility, and wheelchair accessible tours are available.

How to Get There

The Temple of Poseidon is located at the southern tip of the Attica peninsula, about 43 miles (70 kilometers) southeast of Athens. Public buses run from Athens to Sounion, but visiting on a group or private tour means you can enjoy the wonderful drive and stop at towns such as Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, or Lagonisi along the way.

When to Get There

The most popular time to visit the Temple of Poseidon is during summer, but the site can get crowded. Visiting in the early morning is the best way to avoid the crowds and the midday heat, while the most atmospheric time for photos is at sunset. Alternatively, an out-of-season visit, in still balmy May or September, might mean you get the ruins to yourself.

What to See at the Temple of Poseidon

Thought to have been built by Iktinos, the architect who designed Athens' ancient Agora, the Temple of Poseidon is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Greece. Today, only 16 of the original 34 Doric columns remain, one of which is famously inscribed with the name Lord Byron, who visited the temple in the early 19th century. Additional highlights include the remains of a propylaeum and the Temple of Athena, while the real star of the show is the splendid view, which stretches as far as the Cyclades and Peloponnese islands.
