The Basics

A visit to the Blue Grotto is a must for visitors on a day trip or shore excursion from the Amalfi Coast, Naples, or Sorrento. You can reach the cave by water or land, but to enter the cave, you must board an official rowboat. Due to the high number of visitors, wait times can stretch for hours, though passengers of private boat tours are often given precedence. Book your boat transfer to and from the Blue Grotto in advance to avoid long lines, or reserve a private tour with a boat ride around Capri and the Faraglioni rock formations.

Wonderful day at Capris and Blue Grotto
Marco was the best tour guide! He helped make sure we got to the blue grotto early so that we didn’t have to wait to enter. What an amazing experience from start to finish. Wonderful tour. Highly recommend.

Capri Blue Grotto Boat Tour From Sorrento
So lovely! So worth it! The captain took us straight to the blue grotto and we didn’t have to wait in any line because we were first to queue! The captain was so fun and the group of people we met on the boat were all so sweet. Gorgeous views! Definitely recommend! If you want to see the blue grotto, you have to arrive first thing in the morning due to the tide so getting a tour that prioritizes this early in the AM is key.

This tour was amazing!! The blue grotto was so spiritual and beautiful. The island of Capri was breathtaking. Got to swim in one Mediterranean surrounded by cliffs. The tour guide was knowledgeable and super attentive. We had a fabulous time and highly recommend this tour.

Capri and Blue Grotto Day Tour from Naples or Sorrento
We spent a fantastic day in Capri with Michele. He made the trip interesting and stress free. We were able to see the island, spend time looking around the town, and he worked to get us to the blue grotto as quickly as possible once it opened so we didn’t have to wait in line for very long.

Capri and Blue Grotto Day Tour from Naples or Sorrento
Easy booking, a little confusing to find the group at the port but it was a pleasantly small group of five. The guide, Michele was great. It’s always hard to know what to book or not. I was pleasantly surprised, and would recommend, you can get to Capri yourself pretty easily but having someone deal with tickets, bus/car up to various parts of the island and give some history and tips makes this totally worth it.

Full-Day Capri and Blue Grotto Tour from Rome
We had no idea what to expect as it was our first time to Capri, and our tour guide, Luigi, has made it a very fun and effective tour. Got to see the Blue Grotto with like 5 mins waiting in line and must say it was probably the highlight of our trip to Italy. Took chairlift to Mount Solaro with little time waiting in line. Also he showed us very nice gelato place. We got to see the major highlights around Capri before the weather got so hot in the afternoon.

We had an excellent and very pleasant tour to Capri, everything was taken care of for us. Luisa y Federico were very nice hosts on the boat. They showed us the beautiful sights of Capri. We had a nice lunch, also a nice swim around the island. We really enjoyed this experience. I highly recommend this tour!

Capri Coast to Coast: Discover the Island from the Sea with Blue Grotto Option
Wonderful view around Capri Island. Good introduction in English about the Island. The only thing what we didn’t like was that we couldn’t visit the Blue Grotto cause of the sea condition. The tour lasts for 1 hour and not more, so the promise about 2 hours is not true.

Small-Group Capri and Blue Grotto Tour from Sorrento
We had a wonderful day out on the water. The boat was beautiful and it wasn’t too crowded. They were accommodating and considerate even when I thought I may have had to change my time. We hope to return next year!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • At the cave entrance, you must purchase a ticket from the floating ticket office and board a rowboat to enter. This is included in most boat tours.

  • Due to the low cave entrance, the Blue Grotto is only open when weather conditions permit.

  • You’ll have to wait to enter the cave aboard small, open-air rowboats, so bring a hat and sunblock.

  • The journey to the Blue Grotto is not recommended for those who suffer from seasickness.

  • Once inside the cave, many rowboat skippers will treat you to a serenade for a small tip.

How to Get to the Blue Grotto

You can reach the Blue Grotto by sea from the Marina Grande port or by land from the town of Anacapri.

When to Get There

The cave is most crowded in summer and during the midday hours, so plan to visit first thing in the morning to avoid a long wait to enter. Note that the Blue Grotto is open only when sea conditions permit, so when the waters are rough or there are high winds, the cave may close with no advance warning.

Capri by Land

The Blue Grotto can only be visited by sea, but the island of Capri has a number of attractions on land, as well. Take an island tour of Villa San Michele, with its sweeping views over the Mediterranean, the lush Gardens of Augustus, and the 14th-century Charterhouse of San Giacomo.
