The southern state of Kerala has a network of serene backwater canals that extend more than 550 miles (900 km) and offer a glimpse of an India that’s more relaxed than the India you’ll see in big cities. Here are some options for exploring them.
Wonderla Amusement Park Kochi
Kumarapuram, P O, Pallikkara, Kochi, Kerala, 683565
Wonderla Kochi offers more than 50 rides for all ages and levels of daring. Young children can enjoy a carousel and gentle coasters, while older kids and adults can ride the log ride, the Ferris wheel, and roller coasters including the Caterpillar Coaster. For thrill seekers, top picks include Recoil, a reverse looping roller coaster, and Equinox 360, which spins riders at the end of a pendulum that swings 360 degrees. Water rides include waterslides from gentle to steep and looping, a lazy river, and a water-play area for younger children.
Most travelers visit the park independently while staying in and around Kochi. Fast-track tickets, available in limited numbers, allow you to save time and go to the front of lines. These can be a good investment during summer, when wait times tend to be long.
Things to Know Before You Go
Proper swimwear, which is available for sale, must be worn in the pool and waterslide areas.
Wonderla Kochi has several on-site restaurants, food courts, and cafeterias.
Lockers are available to keep your valuables safe while you’re on rides.
Wheelchairs and strollers are available to rent.
Height and weight restrictions apply to some rides.
Some pools are only for men or women, which can help lone women or groups of female friends feel more comfortable at the park.
How to Get There
Wonderla Kochi is located in Pallikara, about 9 miles (15 kilometers) from Ernakulam (mainland Kochi). It’s possible to get a local bus to the park, but a private vehicle or taxi is more convenient. Follow highway 41 from Ernakulam.
When to Get There
Wonderla Kochi is open every day of the week, from late morning to early evening. Opening hours are slightly longer on the weekend, and the dry and wet sides of the park also keep different hours. Weekends and school holidays are busiest, as the park is very popular with locals.
Children’s Science Park
Another family-friendly attraction in Kochi, the Children’s Science Park features science-related attractions, such as 8D movie screenings, as well as regular rides, playground equipment, and lots of space for kids to run around. It’s open all day on weekends, but only in the evenings during the week.
