A world-class craft workshop that follows Kyoto craftsmen in townhouses

A world-class craft workshop that follows Kyoto craftsmen in townhouses

star-1
1
It is one of the few workshops in modern times where you can learn at a craftsmanship shop. The venue for the experience in front of the temple famous for Zen in Kyoto, Daitokuji, is located in the same site. “Separation”, where the workshop is held, is a renovation of an old Kyoto building (Kyomachiya) about 100 years ago. In addition, there are works of contemporary artists from Japan and abroad, You can enjoy a space where you can enjoy tradition and art. The items we make are cute items made by “knobwork” born in the Edo period. The design is 3 patterns. In addition, the metal fittings are 3 patterns: clip, bag, and bag charm. In addition to the standard 8 colors, there are two seasonal colors that can be selected from 10 light silks. Only one in the world with infinite combinations. Enjoy your favorite thumbwork! Kinkakuji Temple is 10 minutes by bus before and after the experience. It is also recommended that you stop by Zengu Shrine or Daitokuji Temple, where you can enjoy a beautiful stone garden, or Imamiya Shrine, which has the oldest Japanese tea house (cafe) born more than 1000 years ago! This area is also attractive for its calm atmosphere, so please enjoy it slowly. * Private activities (charters) are also available for those who wish.

Zen Meditation for Life in Kyoto

Zen Meditation for Life in Kyoto

Kyoto has been the principal home of Zen since its introduction to Japan from China at the beginning of the 13th century. Kyoto is therefore rightly famous for its Zen-influenced gardens, etc. However, the heart of Zen is the practice of meditation, for meditation is the very meaning of the word “Zen.” Given this, it is ironic there are so few opportunities for short-term visitors to Kyoto to have more than a brief introduction to Zen meditation while visiting Zen temples. Thus, this workshop is unique in providing an extended, in-depth introduction to both the theory and practice of meditation (zazen) under the guidance of American-born, Sōtō Zen Buddhist priest and scholar Rev. Dr. Brian Victoria. Rev. Victoria will introduce you to both the theory and practice of Zen meditation, employing traditional meditation cushions (or chairs if needed) in a private meditation hall. By workshop completion, participants will become confident in their ability to continue meditating on their own.

Ikebana (Japanese traditional flower arrangement) class in the center of Kyoto

Ikebana (Japanese traditional flower arrangement) class in the center of Kyoto

The art of flower arranging[Ikebana]has began about 1400 years ago with the beginning of Buddhism in Japan. People wishing to honor Buddha with gifts of flowers wanted them arranged artistically. The first style was the Rikka style. These arrangements were formal and difficult to compose. Buddhist priests used an even simpler style, and Kado, the study of flower arranging, became more popular than ever. Harmony is the goal of the art of flower arranging, and the basis for arrangements is the triad of Heaven-Earth-Human. Don’t you try to make your own beautiful flower arrangement with Kado master?
