Mt. Etna (Monte Etna)

Sicily, Italy

The Basics

You can hike, ride, or take a cable car up Mount Etna, with full- and half-day tours from the nearby cities of Catania, Taormina, and Messina. The Funivia dell’Etna runs a cable car from the Rifugio Sapienza up the mountain to about 8,200 feet (2,500 meters). From there, you can join a guided hike of the volcanic area known as the Valle del Bove, or a less strenuous 4x4 jeep ride. Combine a visit to Mount Etna with a stop at the nearby Alcantara Gorge, carved out by an ancient lava flow. Mount Etna sunset tours are especially spectacular, and wine enthusiasts can choose a tour that combines a visit to Mount Etna with wine tastings at some of the wineries located along the slopes.

Mount Etna Day Trip from Taormina
It was a very nice trip and I loved it there. But there is one thing, the description says you go up to 3300 meters. But on the tour they told up they didn't go further then 2750 meter. Cause of safety reasons, still a really nice trip but I advise you change it in your description of the trip.

Etna Excursions from Catania
+ Very nice and exciting trip with beautiful sight. + guides were fantastic + final run down Mt Etna was incredible - Hygiene concept was not really safe in COVID-19 times (lent shoes with pre worn socks) - air condition was on and off Overall would recommend it.

Etna Morning Jeep Tour
The info tha Giovanni gave us made the difference. He is kind, enjoyable and passionate about his work. He was on time at the meeting point in the morningand on the way to the cable car we made several stops and he explained to us the history, the formation and the evolution of Etna. We stoped to try local honey, wine and olive oil at a local producer. I definetely recommend the tour! Thank you, Giovanni!

Mt. Etna and Taormina village full day tour from Catania
We had a fantastic day - together with my 9 y old son. The pickup was right at the announced time, and everything went smooth. We chose to go all the way up on Etna and luckily the weather was great too. Taormina is beautiful and it was fantastic to have a glance at Isola Bella from high up. Our guide Guiseppe was great - very friendly, knowledgeable and took the effort to tell us everything in two languages, English and Italian.

Mt. Etna nature and flavors half day Tour from Catania
Perfect tour and guide , we’ve had a lot of fun and enjoyed the full length of the trip. We’ve booked trekking shoes and the guide brought us the exact size which helped us visit seamlessly the etna sightseeings. Our guide had great knowledge about the volcanos and Sicily history Top notch guide with hotel drop and pick up. Many thanks

Things to Know Before You Go

  • If you’re exploring Mount Etna on foot, be sure to wear appropriate shoes, a hat, and sunblock, and carry ample water.

  • You’ll want to capture the breathtaking sunset views; don’t forget your camera.

  • For kids, a visit to the volcano can be a welcome break from sightseeing, so consider a family-friendly hike or fun 4x4 tour.

  • The cable car is accessible to wheelchair users, as is one mountain trail.

  • There is only one public bus daily from Catania to Mount Etna, so it’s best to visit on a private tour that includes transportation to the mountain.

When to Get There

Eruptions occur on Mount Etna with such regularity that there’s always the possibility of witnessing one. Eruptions that come from the summit of the mountain (rather than out from the side) can be the most visually stunning, especially at night, when brilliant orange lava spits into the dark night sky.Sunset is also a beautiful time to visit.

Wine and Food at Mount Etna

Despite the fact that eruptions have been responsible for serious damage to the cities and towns near Etna for millennia, people still continue to inhabit the mountain. The rich volcanic soil is particularly fertile for raising fruit, vegetables, and vineyards—many prestigious wines come from these mountain slopes, and it’s easy to sample these labels by joining a tour that includes wine tastings.
