Day 1: Key West Characters When you’re talking Key West, the name Hemingway is bound to crop up. The author lived on there for more than a decade, in Old Town. This is also where President Harry S. Truman chose a getaway on Key West. Eisenhower and Kennedy also stayed at the house at 111 Front Street, which is open for guided tours. Day 2: Conch tours and mansions Jump aboard the Conch Train, a hit since 1958. The 90-minute train ride begins on Front Street and loops through Old Town Key West. Bone up on the island’s conch history at Heritage House, browse the Pirate Museum, and see treasures from the deep at the Shipwreck Museum. Day 3: Dip your toe in the water If you can’t decide where to start, the full-day Power Adventure combines a catamaran sail across the Gulf of Mexico, kayaking in the mangroves, parasailing, kayaking and snorkeling. Go for a cruise and view Key West from the water, or drink champagne on a romantic sail into the sunset.

The Everglades National Park, a 1.5 million acre area that stretches over the southern part of Florida, is unique in many ways. En te midden van mangroves, cipressen, tropisch hardhout en moerasvelden zijn er oneindig veel mogelijkheden voor wandelen, fietsen, kanoën, kajakken of boottochten. U kunt de Everglades het best bezoeken in het droge seizoen – van december tot april – als het weer gematigd en prettig is en de dieren in alle overvloed aanwezig zijn. In het natte zomerseizoen – mei tot en met november – is het warm en vochtig en zijn er regelmatig stormregens in de namiddag. De dieren gaan daar voor op de loop, maar de insecten juist niet. Enige voordeel is dat het qua bezoekers minder druk is in die tijd.

Browse the world’s largest indoor and outdoor trash and treasure market, complete with funfair rides and drive-in movies, at the 14-screen Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop and outdoor theatre. View the area’s over-the-top millionaires’ mansions from the water on a sightseeing cruise of the port and yacht marina. If there’s one must-do in Fort Lauderdale it’s a dinner cruise aboard the fun and fabulous Jungle Queen Riverboat, for revue entertainment and a nonstop. Swamp safaris to visit the traditional home of the Seminole Indians.
