Gregory Lake

Gregory Lake, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

The basics

Constructed to replace a swampy area and generate electricity, Gregory Lake quickly became a place for relaxation and recreation. Today, its waters and parklands form a nature reserve and offer numerous attractions ranging from boat rides to picnic spots, kids activities, and street food stands.

Visitors pay a small fee to access the park and are then free to enjoy its trails and payable attractions. The lake is included in all tours to Nuwara Eliya: opt to explore the town by vehicle or foot or to take bike tours that follow the cycle paths around its shores. Many Nuwara Eliya day trips from Colombo and Negombo include a lake stop between round-ups of the town and nearby Ella; others combine the lake with visits to Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Kandy. The lake also features on many multiday trips around the island, most often as a break between bouts of sightseeing.

If you’re traveling by public transport, however, opt for a bus from Kandy via Peradeniya, or take a train from Peradeniya to Nuwara Eliya—the 4-hour journey through rolling tea estates and palms is one of the world’s most scenic.
