Buitengewone gids in Istanbul

Sterk aanbevolen!

We were a family of four (2 teens and two parents.) we were in town for barely 2 days and wanted to make the most of it. We signed up for a full day tour. Didem, our guide was lovely. She was at our hotel on time and ready to go. She was full of facts and knowledge about the sights we visited. Bring completely unknowledgeable about the city it was great to have someone who could get us quickly on and out of the top places. She even assisted us with some shopping! I would recommend this service and Didem.

Our guide Mahir was both fun and knowledgeable, in addition to flexible! I would like to give 6 out 5 stars. So far, my experience with Viator overall (after two excursions) has been excellent- my family and I highly recommend the private tour. Worth every penny

Disappointing Tour

This is a walking tour , which was fine. We are older and have no problem walking but she seemed in a rush walking so far ahead of me and my husband . We were practically running to hero up with her . She said we would stop for lunch , we told her we just had a big buffet breakfast and typically only eat breakfast and dinner and don’t want to stop for lunch , next thing we knew she said this is our lunch place , a place where she knew owners , she wanted to eat not us. Of course we paid for lunch !! Than she had us walk into a shop she knew owners , they were very pushy for us to buy items we really did t want to buy that day. Out of 15 days of tours in 4 different turkey cities this one was the inss we we felt we were taken advantage of and pushed to go into restaurants and shops we didn’t want to. We should of spoken up and said this is our tour not yours. This is on our dollar not yours. Never book this tour. We told her after that she didnt have to stay with us at bizarre in instanbul. We will do this on our own. We were so done with her !!!

Dear Dena, Thank you for posting the feedback, these reviews are very helpful in terms of developing ourselves and setting our service standards. As per understood that the dissatisfaction you encountered is not related to the features of the product but the service received, which we totally understand. As you may have noticed before booking us, the reviews also monitor that we work with the best guides who are passionate about their work. We always courage our guides to focus on their profession but nothing else so the discomfort you had is unacceptable on our end too. We have taken the necessary steps to avoid giving way to such an unpleasant experience and we thank you once more for your support in doing us so. We wish to see you in Istanbul once more in the near future and we guarantee that you will receive a perfect service that matches our standards at that particular time. Best regards, Ahmet

Ugur is a fantastic guide. He made our trip! He listened to what we were most interested in and made sure we made the most of our time. He was super knowledgeable, especially about history and very happy to answer our many and varied questions! His insider knowledge was invaluable, especially on good food, the food places and tips were an added bonus on a brilliant tour of the main sights. We would definitely recommend!

The best guide I have ever had in my entire life!!

We were on a cruise that allowed for a rare overnight stay in Istanbul. So we booked the 2 day personalized tour to make the most of it. Communication and planning with the company was excellent. They contacted me far ahead of our tour date to confirm what things we really wanted to make sure we saw in Istanbul as well as what they could fit into the amount of time we would be in town. Then they built a custom itinerary for us and assigned us a tour guide who was waiting with a smile on her face and a sign in her hand as soon as we exited the cruise ship terminal. Before telling you all about the tour we took, I have to tell you that I have traveled all over the world and have taken hundreds of tours and I can say without any doubt that this tour experience was far and away the best tour I have ever taken anywhere in my entire life. And our guide, Palin, was the primary reason I'm giving this tour such a glowing review. If you can request her as your guide when you book, I highly recommend her. There is no question that she's operating in her area of genius and talent being a guide. Plus, she spoke impeccable English. Since we came in to port on a Saturday and the mosques and bazaar are closed on Sundays, Palin planned for us to visit the sites that would not be open on day 2 as soon as possible when we arrived. BTW, You have the option of booking this tour 'as is' which means you're walking everywhere. Or for an additional cost, you can add transportation and you will get an air conditioned van with a professional driver that will drop you and pick you up from every place you go and make it easy. Being that it was a warm day and my father-in-law traveling with us just had knee replacement surgery about 2 months ago, we felt the van was a good idea. If you're going and it's warm, I highly recommend adding the van to your reservation as it also allowed us too see more sites and change plans easily. So the driver took us to old Istanbul. Traffic was so congested that day that he suggested we get out and walk the last quarter mile because it would be faster and I'm certain it was. Our 1st stop was the Hagia Sofia mosque, a truly beautiful piece of architecture and art in the center of town. We had always wanted to see the blue mosque too, but Palin said that it is open but all of the mosaics and artwork was currently covered because it was undergoing renovation and restoration work. So we could pay and walk in, but there was really nothing to see. So we all decided against taking the time to see nothing. Plus, we wanted to be sure we had time to do some shopping at the grand bizarre before it closed up. For our next stop, our driver took us to the palace where the sultans lived and ruled the caliphate for many many years. This is a massive walled area of the city that contains mosques and living quarters and harem quarters and massive industrial kitchens used to feed 4000 people. There are tons of artifacts and weapons and all kinds of things from the time when Istanbul was a major world power center. With Istanbul's location making it the gateway between Europe and Asia as well as the end of the silk road, it was the place that was the center of global trade for 3000 or 4000 years of human history. Anything that was available in the world could be found in Istanbul (or Constantinople, or Byzantium) a very cool history. After seeing the palace, Palin really did want to have us at least see some of the blue mosque because you shouldn't visit Istanbul without seeing it. So she was going to take us down to the sisterns, but we felt if we couldn't really see the primary artwork and mosaics we would rather take that time and spend it shopping at the bazaar because at this point in the trip my kids and my wife were dying to get a little bit of shopping time in the city. As we were walking over to the blue mosque I communicated this to Palin. She was so easy and flexible she just turned on a dime with no hesitation and adjusted our tour plan. She said she knew of a way to achieve both so she could show us a sistern and we could learn about Turkish rugs and how they're made. She had the driver pick us up and drop us off a few blocks from the grand bazaar where she took us into a beautiful Turkish rug shop. The owner took us up to the roof and we watched a gentleman weaving silk directly from silkworm cocoons and allowed us to feel the strength of the fibers and see how that whole process works. Then he took us all the way down to the basement below the shop, the bottom level of which is not only a display room for their inventory of rugs, but also contained a loom where a woman he said was one of the 5 best best rugweavers in the planet has worked for several decades for them. She was a very sweet woman who didn't speak any English, but we got a brief demonstration on how the thread is woven into these beautiful rugs and the unique knotting process that they use to make their rugs so indestructible. The shop owner then offered us a seat and hibiscus tea, wine, and Turkish coffee, which we all loved. As we sat there with our drinks, Palin called our attention to the fact that we were sitting in a medieval sistern at that moment. The building that the rug shop is in was a camel house centuries ago where where travelers who had come from far away would stop and have their camels taken care of, cleaned, and fed. Typically there was an inn attached to camel house where the owners could sleep, although we were told in the cold winter months they slept with the camels to stay warm. So, the basement we were sitting in was the sistern that stored water for the camels. It was very interesting to be down there and we did buy a couple of Rugs that cost a bit more than I was comfortable with, but they're beautiful. After the rug shop and demonstration we were about a 1/2 a block away from the grand bazaar. After a brief safety lesson from Palin, we went in and did a little bit of crazed shopping with the last half an hour before the shops all started to close. She then had our driver rush us back to the port because we had a dinner cruise booked for later that evening. The next morning, Palin arrived at 8:30am sharp and we began our 2nd day of activities. Because she was disappointed at not being able to show us the blue mosque, she said she had a "hidden gem" mosque that she wanted to show us that had very similar mosaics and artwork but on a smaller scale, but in her opinion was even prettier than the blue mosque so we were all in. The driver dropped us off and I did not see any mosque there. We walked about a 1/2 a block and then turned up an alleyway that I would never have even approached let alone walked into were I roaming the city on my own. Even with our very experienced local guide I was a little concerned that the dark narrow alleys of this older area of the city may not be the best place to be even in broad daylight. Then we turned a corner and suddenly we were standing on the front entrance patio of the most gorgeous small mosque with beautiful mosaic tile work. We took our shoes off went in and we were alone in the building for about half an hour. So not only did we see a hidden gem, in her words, but it felt like it was exclusively just for us. After The visit to the mosque we only had about 2 hours left before all aboard and we really wanted to visit the Istanbul spice market, which happened to be one block away from the mosque We walked over and did some shopping for spices and found all kinds of amazing things and then she asked if we would be interested in seeing the area of Istanbul where the locals go and hang out. Of course we were up for that. Our driver took us up to the top of the hill in new Istanbul and dropped us near an outdoor sidewalk shopping area. This was great. We got to see the hilarious and talented ice cream vendors. Turkish ice cream is an experience you should witness. Plus, we got to do a little shopping for some clothing items my daughter wanted. We walked down this street of shops and I was aware we were running out of time to make it back, but at that moment our driver pulls up and saved us waking all the way back to where we started. He drove us back to the cruise ship terminal and we got on the boat with a little time to spare. By the time we had to part ways with Palin I felt we were all good friends. She even fully engaged and connected with my teenagers (16 & 18) and you know what a miracle that is since they tend to hate everybody and everything at that age. We parted with extended hugs for all and told her to be sure to look us up if she comes to the States because we'll provide lodging and be the guide for her. She showed us all the things we wanted to see in Istanbul and then some. She made sure we were safe and well-cared-for. She adjusted plans on the fly several times for us to be flexible with what we desired. Then we parted as friends. Thanks to her, this was a brilliant experience that I would aggressively recommend to anyone visiting Turkey. Book this tour and ask for Palin, you won't be sorry. Just be sure to tell her the Fox-Smith's said Hi.

Our tour in Istanbul with Kemal was amazing! He kept us entertained with explaining the history of each landmark and interesting details as we explored the area. Definitely recommend! We originally booked the private van, but someone from the company called and said it wasn’t really necessary for our particular trip. (They refunded the cost.) They could have just taken the money, so I definitely appreciated their integrity.

Our guide Asli made our day in Istanbul absolutely amazing and memorable. She was knowledgeable, kind, flexible with the schedule, and was able to answer all our questions at the historical sites. She took us shopping for specific things we wanted to purchase as well as accommodated our need for vegan food and treats. She was a dream!
