Positives
+ The boat was comfortable
+ The facilities were good
+ The staff were very friendly and knowledgable
+ The breakfast, fruit and welcoming tea were nice
+ The pickup van arrived on time and was modern and comfortable
Negatives
- I had to chase to confirm the pick-up. When I did, I was informed that there would be a $30 each way charge, because my hotel was too far away. Apparently this is detailed on the Trip Advisor listing, although I can find no reference to it.
- The notification of this $60 charge was only sent after the free cancellation deadline had passed. I can accept that a charge from Galle to Mirissa is necessary; if I had known in advance (I booked and specified the hotel we needed to be picked up from a month before my trip) I would have cancelled and used a more local provider.
- The company do not give breakfast to kids because of the risk of sea sickness, so mine went from 5am (pickup) to 2pm (tour end) with just some fruit to sustain them (expecting breakfast and a shorter trip we didn't pack snacks).
Overall
We enjoyed the trip and would recommend it. If you have young children, I think it is better to wait until they are older. We thought they would be as engaged as they were on the elephant safari, but the ratio of searching for whales to finding them (~7 hours: 10 minutes) made this trip better for adults and older kids.
