Discover the art and science behind one of Japan’s most beloved convenience meals, the bento box, during a 3- to 3.5-hour course allowing the chance to make a bento of your very own. This cooking lesson is a fascinating way to learn the history, preparation and culture behind this delicious Japanese meal.

Begin your bento box course in the morning at a cooking studio in Kyoto. Start your session with some background into the origins of this Japanese foodstuff. The history of the bento begins in the 13th century, a time during which the Song Dynasty used the word ‘bento’ as a slang term for anything convenient.

Start your cooking experience with a lesson from a Japanese master chef, who will demonstrate the techniques used to prepare many bento box staples. Try your hand at creating several typical bento box specialties, including miso soup, tempura vegetables and egg rolls, a perennial favorite of Japanese schoolchildren nationwide. Depending on when you take your course, the menu may differ, as it’s adjusted every three months to include the best-available seasonal ingredients.

At the conclusion of your cooking class, stow your knife and apron and sit down to enjoy the delicious flavors of your handmade bento box creation with other course participants. When you finish your bento lunch, you’ll also be given copies of the session recipes so you can recreate them for friends and family back home.

A highlight of the holiday

What a great way to spend a few hours, my wife and I were lucky enough to be the only ones in the class so we had all the attention. The lesson was interesting, lots of helpful tips to make the perfect Bento box (and it was). I would highly recommend this class.
A Must! And Coco is the best teacher!

Coco was literally the sweetest and did so well teaching us how to cook the Japanese way. She really gave us so much insight on how each dish is created and how it fits into their culture. And major plus all the food ended up super delicious.
Amazing and informative class!

I absolutely LOVED this class. The instructors were so friendly and helped through the entire process. It was a small group and we all had turns learning and asking questions. I was so proud to have created the entire bento box by myself - and it was so delicious!!

My boyfriend and I enjoyed this activity so much. We prepared 5 different dishes: miso soup, spinach with sesame, teriyaki chicken, shrimp and vegetables tempura and rolled sushi with tamagoyaki (egg omelette). I use to cook some of these meals at home but I've learnt many useful tips!

Ive always intrigued by the exquisiteness of Japanese cuisine, and this cooking class was just what I'm looking for to learn about how they make them. Surprisingly, every step of Bento box cooking was fairly easy, just follow the instruction and do it carefully, the Bento would look great and taste great in the end, even for someone who never cooks, like me! Love this experience, I had the greatest fun.

Had the best time in this wonderful class. Learned to make some oishi delicious! dishes, including one of my favorites -- gomaae! It's a very attractive setup, the teacher and assistants were super, and the food we made: WOW! My fellow students were all into it and we had a great time, and a delectable bento box lunch we had each made! I have taken the recipes and teachings and been creating my own delicious Japanese food since returning. Seems I always have a pot of dashi on the stove or in the fridge as the heart of so many recipes. the class's benefits just keep on going! Highly recommended!!!

An incredible class! The food we made wa ps great. The best part was that there was only another person in the class which made it very personal. I loved it. Our teacher Keiko was great and the kitchen where we had the class was professional and very beautiful. I highly recommend it!
